Gettin' All Philosophical-Like
Yesterday MegaStyles was issued a challenge from Mick at Manhattan Transfer about the role of fashion in evolution. The challenge concerns a post at 2blowhards about scientists, evolution, and the karmic purpose of push-up bras. MegaStyles responds:

Many valid points in this post. Fashion is about self-expression but definitely status as well. However, while there is a certain logic about fashion existing to prove a woman's fiscal fitness, I have to agree with many of the post comments: most men are largely oblivious about women's clothes and can't tell a Gucci T from a Gap equivalent to save their life. Fashion is a way for both sexes to flaunt their physiques, but creates a social, fiscal hierarchy between women, with men mostly out of the loop. Should I score a Birkin bag, I'll gush to my girlfriends, not my date. That said, a girl's place within the women's social hierarchy can give her greater allure and access to alpha males. So fashion can work as a sexual selection tool, albeit indirectly.

Ya hear?

About MegaStyles

Meghan Stier was a New York fashion editor until she moved to Cambridge, MA and decided to become a doctor. She, along with her new Birkenstock fetish, is working on her post-baccalaureate and has cancelled her Vogue subscription, although she still watches E! sometimes a lot.

She thinks Shakespearean characters make great names for pets, dislikes mesh Chinese slippers, and would like to make homemade mayonnaise one day but wonders if mayonnaise merits such effort.
