Organic-ize Me
I just got back from watching "Super Size Me." Wow. That is a really amazing, funny, fascinating movie that everybody in America should see. Especially people who have not read "Fast Food Nation." Just learning about all the chemicals and additives and preservatives and seeing fast food on a 20 foot tall screen really hit home how many chemicals there are in everyday food and really grossed me out. And I am a very healthy eater to begin with.
So, I'm starting a little experiment of my own. For the next week, I'm only eating organic food. No regular dairy, no more Oscar Meyer bacon in my salads everyday, no more Diet Coke with lunch. I'm going to go capital "O" organic--none of these veggie burgers with 40 different indecipherable ingredients--that's just as bad. No chemicals, no meat substitutes, no processing, the works.
I am off to a good start, as my brother and I just ate our dinner post-movie at the Candle Cafe, this chill, non-crunchy organic diner. Breakfast may be a little more difficult—I bought some organic milk and some cottage cheese tonight but on second thought, the cottage cheese, though it does not list "guar gum" as an ingredient, like my usual brand, does not have any organic seal or anything saying it's organic. But the brand is called Friendship, which sounds Quaker-ish and conscientious, so I guess that will be good enough for the morning.
